Wednesday 25th June- Saturday 12th July

Distance Covered: 88.6 miles
Miles to Finish: 1552.2 miles

An intended swift resupply in Atkins was somewhat delayed by a fortuitous meeting of a vin yard manager by the name of Rusty at his Davis Valley winery. We stopped in for wine tasting just off the trail and were met with a superb offer to work in the vines for a day.

The offer was further extended as we discovered the winery was hosting a Blue grass music festival over the weekend and vacancies for car parking duty needed to be filled. So Charlie, 'Bear', 'Lone Star' and 'Grizzly' managed to work for 3 days at a rate of 100 dollars a day.

A lovely lady called Ginette fed us like Kings in exchange for helping out withn the dishes. The wine was superb and although the music was a little different and perhaps not our cuppa tea it was a great insight into American folk music.

Above: A local who had us in hysterics with his vast array of quotes. He admits to driving like a maniac and when asked why, he replied anything with a motor has 2 speeds: ON and OFF!

Above: Charlie managed to find work and duly got paid handsomely for helping the parking.

After all that food and vino hiking was a little sluggish for the first few days. Duffy stormed ahead on the first evening leaving the rest of the party stumbling behind rotund, panting and a little forlorn.

We had planned to arrive in Pearisburg for the 4th of July but our pace was a little slower due to the indulgences over the festival. And so we decided to stop off in a town called Bland where Bear was meeting his cousin for a ride back home. So Tom, Paul and Charlie had a fittingly bland early night, whilst Duffy was somewhere in the woods with news of a flaring injury through the grape vine.

We did not catch up with him for another few days until the 8th. It had been a week since Duffy had seen the other three and it was superb to finally be reunited.
